During many centuries, Rochester remained the second most important city and port in the UK. This is explained by its location on the shore of the great estuary – the sea Bay, formed by the waters of the River Thames. Rochester was functioned as a marine Outpost that opened a direct route to London, the main city of the country. It is clear why Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral became one of the main attractions of England: the fortress defended the way into the depths of the country, it was so large and powerful, that it overcame any war and any time. The impressive Cathedral became the «face» of England that is visible to all, who are travelling to London by the seaside.
